Learn how to stop a dripping tap quickly with basic tools. Our licensed plumber walks you through identifying the type of tap, removing the handle, replacing the washer or cartridge, and reassembling — saving you water and money.
G'day, today we're going to show you how to fix a dripping tap. First, turn off the water supply at the isolation valve under the sink. If there's no isolation valve, you'll need to turn off the mains. Next, remove the tap handle — most handles have a small screw under the cap or behind the handle. Once the handle is off, you'll see the cartridge or spindle. For a traditional tap, unscrew the spindle and check the washer at the bottom. If it's worn, flat, or cracked, that's your culprit. Take it to the hardware store to match the size, pop the new one in, reassemble, and turn the water back on. For ceramic disc taps, you'll need to replace the whole cartridge. If you're unsure at any point, call a licensed plumber — it's always better to be safe than sorry.
