Full bathroom renovation including new plumbing rough-in, relocation of water and waste points, installation of a freestanding bath, double vanity, and walk-in shower with frameless glass. All plumbing work completed to Australian Standards.
Project Brief
This project involved the complete plumbing fitout for a main bathroom renovation in a 1990s brick home. The client's builder had engaged us to handle all plumbing rough-in and final fix for a full redesign of the bathroom layout, including relocating the toilet, adding a freestanding bath, and installing a double vanity with a wall-hung design.
Rough-In Stage
The first stage of the project required significant modification to the existing water supply and waste drainage infrastructure:
- Relocation of the toilet waste from the centre of the room to the rear wall for a back-to-wall pan
- New hot and cold water points for the freestanding bath, positioned through the floor slab
- Double water supply points for the wall-hung double vanity at 550mm centres
- New 50mm floor waste relocated to the centre of the shower area
- Installation of a linear shower drain (900mm) with appropriate fall to waste
All waste pipes were laid to the correct fall of 1:40 for 50mm lines and 1:60 for the 100mm toilet waste. We also installed acoustic pipe lagging on all waste lines running through the wall cavity to minimise noise.
Hot Water Considerations
With the addition of the freestanding bath (requiring a higher flow rate) and the double vanity, we assessed the existing hot water system's capacity. The client's Rinnai continuous flow unit had sufficient capacity, but we upgraded the supply line from 15mm to 20mm copper to ensure adequate flow to all new outlets.
Final Fix
Once the tiling and waterproofing were complete, we returned for the final fix stage:
- Installation of the freestanding bath with floor-mounted mixer and hand shower
- Wall-mounted double vanity with pop-up wastes and bottle traps
- Back-to-wall toilet suite with concealed cistern
- Frameless walk-in shower with ceiling-mounted rain shower head and hand shower
- Heated towel rail connection
Quality Assurance
Before handover, we pressure-tested all water supply lines and conducted a full drainage test using dye testing to confirm all waste connections were sealed and flowing correctly. The waterproofing membrane was inspected and certified prior to tiling.
Result
The finished bathroom is both functional and stunning. The plumbing work was completed on schedule, allowing the builder to maintain their project timeline. All plumbing work was carried out in compliance with AS/NZS 3500 and a compliance certificate was issued to the homeowner and builder.
